Making a Referral

Step By Step

Step One

CALL Spence-Chapin

If your client expresses an interest in considering adoption, call Spence-Chapin at 212-369-0300 or email Amy Silverman, our Assistant Director of Birth Parent Services at amy.silverman@spence-chapin.org to make a referral or have a consultation. In NJ call 908-522-0043. In LI call 631-979-5863. A referral is appropriate even if your client is uncertain of her plan.

Step Two

Spence-Chapin Meets with Client

If your patient is still pregnant, a Spence-Chapin social worker will make an appointment to meet her in our offices or in your clinic or any other convenient location.

Step Three

After Delivery

If your patient has already delivered, Spence-Chapin staff can come to the hospital to meet with her. The agency will need some medical history information on your patient and her baby and will ask for your assistance in having our forms completed and having your patient sign medical releases.

Step Four

Hospital Discharge/Interim Care

Spence-Chapin will come to the hospital for the discharge of the baby if your patient has elected to use our interim care program and is considering adoption.

Step Five

Options Counseling/Choosing an Adoptive Family

Spence-Chapin will continue to provide options counseling, and many women we serve ultimately choose to parent their babies. Others continue to plan adoption and will be empowered to choose and meet the adoptive family, and have ongoing contact.

Step Six

Post-Placement Support

Spence-Chapin will continue to work together with you to ensure ongoing support for your client
