Teen ProgrammingDURING THE TEEN YEARS, A YOUNG PERSON GRAPPLES with many complex issues of identity; adoption adds one more element to integrate. To meet the needs of teens, Spence-Chapin offers a wide range of programming.Adoption ForumsThese are topic-oriented presentations and discussions targeted to the specific interests of teen adoptees and moderated by a Spence-Chapin social worker. Past topics have included dating and relationships, search and reunion, and questions about identity.
Mentorship ProgramThis group mentoring program brings youth and adult adoptees together for monthly group activities around NYC, such as bowling, museum visits, an adoption forum, and more! The goal of the program is for the kids to have lots of fun and to get to know peers and positive adult role models who also share the experience of adoption. Activities happen on a monthly basis from September 2010-May 2011. The 2010-2011 Mentorship Program at Spence-Chapin will be accepting applications for kids in grades 6, 7, and 8, adopted domestically or internationally, starting in June of 2010.Program for High School StudentsWe are seeking teens adopted domestically or internationally in grades 9 through 12 to be part of the 2010-2011 Teen Program. This group meets at Spence-Chapin's Manhattan office six times throughout the school year and provides a space for teens to hang out with one another as well as adult adoptees. Along with social activities, we will have panels and guest speakers on a range of adoption related topics.PARENTS: If you think your child might be interested in participating in either of these groups, please contact Sam Kellogg at 212-360-0259 or skellogg@spence-chapin.org. Applications will be sent out in April 2010, so call now for more information! ADULT ADOPTEES INTERESTED IN BECOMING MENTORS: Make a difference—become a mentor! We are seeking adults ages 21+ who were adopted internationally or domestically who would like to be a positive role model by sharing their experiences and building relationships with kids.
