Making Contact
You may have learned about Spence-Chapin's free services —for expectant women and for women who have recently given birth— from our Web site, from a friend or neighbor or from a social worker at a clinic or hospital. If you decide to contact us directly through our toll free line (800) 321-5683, the first thing you should know is that there is absolutely no pressure to choose adoption. We are here to give you assistance and to help you make the best choice for yourself and your child. One of our counselors will answer all of your questions and anything that you tell her will be kept private. If you feel comfortable with what you learn, the next step will be to arrange a private meeting at a location convenient for you with one of our birth parent counselors.
Meeting with a Counselor
At your private meeting, you can talk about your personal situation and discuss your immediate needs.
Some of our clients require assistance with pregnancy-related needs such as a place to stay, pre-natal care and maternity clothes.
All of our clients have a friendly counselor who will listen and help them work through their thoughts and feelings about their situation.
You are in control of all the decisions when you make a plan with Spence-Chapin. Your counselor is available to help you decide what is right for you and your baby.
Considering Your Options
Your counselor will give you complete, unbiased information about all of your possible options including pregnancy termination, parenting, care by family members and voluntary adoption. For example, if you want to parent your child, she will discuss how you might be able to find support from your partner or family and where you might find the resources to make that possible. If you do not feel able to parent your child, your counselor will explain how you can make a voluntary adoption plan. Over 65% of our clients decide to parent their babies and about 35% choose adoption. Our clients can feel confident that they have made a loving plan based on access to thorough information.
